Last month we attended the NDA Supply Chain Event in Telford, to exhibit the Advanced Vacuum Drying System (AVDS), a proven technology for conditioning nuclear waste for long term storage in its original container.
The AVDS facilitates 'in-box drying' by applying heat, vacuum and refrigeration to remove moisture content from sludge. It comprises a Vacuum Condensing Unit and up to six drying stations which accommodate self shielded containers. High level control automation, powers the drying stations simultaneously, safeguarding efficiency and minimising operator intervention.
The prototype AVDS was manufactured in 2013, following two years trialling simulant waste. AVDS won the Magnox i4 Innovation award in 2014 and MechaTech Systems were highly commended by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Since then, a further four AVDS have been manufactured, delivered and commissioned at UK decommissioning power stations, and are currently supported and maintained by MechaTech Systems.
